There are many different marathon teams we know of, and each have different styles to how they go about their events. This is an index of all the different teams we know of. I’ll continue adding teams as I find out about them, but in the meantime, if your team isn’t listed here or your information needs updated, just email us (gamemarathons@gmail.com)!
Hot Blooded Gaming: Run by Kreyg, the owner of this site. His marathons frequently turn into a one-man show but usually plays games online directly against the people watching. In addition to marathons, the site also holds another stream a few nights a week and some general game news and commentary.
Ocean City Trinity: Run by Tom, one of the admins of this site. Notable in the player frequently also does most of the commentary, resulting in a marathon similar to a live Let’s Play. More recently, they organize the gamemarathons.com versus marathons, an marathon competition across multiple teams.
Triple Speed Runners: They typically run three unrelated game series at once, and occasionally hold tournaments against the rest of their team. They’re also the other standard team for our versus marathons.
Bonus Stage Marathons: A team consisting primarily of some Let’s Players. They tend to play popular-but-not-A-list game series, usually for the benefit of animal charities.
The Returners: A team with a structure similar to Bonus Stage Marathons. They’re also heavy on team connections, frequently including people from other marathon groups directly participating in their events as players.
Penguins In The Desert Productions: A newer team whose trademarks include “punishments” on the team for reaching certain donation levels and their wacky, entertaining promotional videos. They usually play for the benefit of their local Big Brothers Big Sisters branch, frequently including the “little” brothers/sisters directly into their team.
Gamin For Charity: This team organizes marathons less frequently, but holds them for longer than usual, and tends to simply play a long list of favorites across multiple series and genres.
Zeldathon Team: As the name implies, they run a Legend of Zelda marathon every year, but usually do one or two other events each year as well.
The Speed Gamers: Probably the most well-known and well-publicized team. Their events typically include several Speed Demos Archive-quality speedruns of their games plus a (usually offsite) commentator. They also have a very active community behind them, with some smaller marathons being planned out of their forums.
Desert Bus For Hope: Run by the cast of LoadingReadyRun, which runs several weekly videos on The Escapist. This once-a-year marathon sees the team playing one of the most boring games in existence on a donate-to-extend-play basis with several prize giveaways and side acts for donation goals. We credit them as having done the first live game marathon, as well as the most successful with donations.
Mario Marathon Team: Another once-a-year event, featuring some casual fans of the Mario series in a donate-to-extend-play event heavy on interaction. They’ve probably inspired more people to do game marathons than any other team listed here.
Extra Lives: This team’s marathons usually end up as a race to see who can finish each game first. Also notable for their complete lack of a camera on the players.
Hardmode.org: A newer team generally playing harder games than what most others are used to.
STARS Marathon Team: A newer team whose site also includes some general game discussion and videos.
L+R+A+Start: A team consisting of fans and relatives of Extra Lives, with a fairly similar broadcasting style.
Levels For Lives: Another Extra Lives-inspired team.
Penultimate Studios: A self-proclaimed moviemaking, fundraising, game playing group.
Zeldathon.Net Team: The other major Zelda marathon team, and like their similarly-named counterparts aren’t limited to just Zelda either.
GenGAME: In addition to running the occasional marathon or gaming tournament stream, they’re also reporting on the latest gaming news.
Team Mountain Gaming: These guys are good at making it feel like everyone, even the chat’s, just hanging out. They’re doing marathons more often than most of the teams listed here, though they’re shorter than the norm.
Tantalus 4: A Swedish group, best known for an annual week-long Final Fantasy marathon.
Super Marathon Bros.: A relatively new team, that mostly seems to be on a Nintendo kick.
Speed Demos Archive: Better known as the de facto official record books for the fastest completion times on their games. Their marathons give you pretty much what you would expect from them: a large number of games finished extremely quickly.
Game To Aid: An Australian group, inspired by and having a style similar to the Mario Marathon and Extra Lives.
Benefit Evil: This group gets together every year for a Resident Evil marathon.
